Radiotherapy Physics

Patient pathway workflow

Our Vision

Lead the SWWCC to a position in providing world class healthcare through innovation and clinical developments, participating in a wider range of clinical trials, building a highly functioning team of skilled staff.

Nationally Recognized Excellence

We provide data nationally to the Radiotherapy Dataset and are currently ranked 7th in the UK and 1st in Wales in the proportion of patients receiving newer advanced techniques.

Linear accelerator treatment

Advanced Treatment Planning

Our role is preparing and independently checking, by medical physics experts, the best complex radiation treatment the patient can tolerate, to achieve best practice and decrease the toxicity associated with radiotherapy. We are also now taking over roles traditionally done by Consultants, including outlining target volumes and organs at risk, due to workforce redesign.

High-tech radiotherapy equipment

Electronic Workflow Solutions

As we serve a wide geographical area, Radiotherapy Physics have implemented full electronic working including remote radiation prescribing, to ensure patients start treatment as soon as possible. This has been shown to have a large effect on treatment outcome and allows clinicians to maximize their patient time.

Patient Pathway Management

The patient pathway to radiotherapy treatment can be complex and consists of several key steps involving multiple staff groups across two departments (Oncology and Radiotherapy Physics) and relies on those staff groups working to time sensitive targets.

Radiotherapy Physics is responsible for many of the key steps in the patient pathway to treatment, ensuring seamless coordination and timely delivery of care across our extensive geographical coverage area.
